Outdoor Furniture – Refresh it!

Outdoor Furniture – Refresh it!

Being exposed to rain and harsh sun rays means outdoor furniture takes a beating.  Worn furniture never looks inviting.  You likely spent a lot of money on it.  What are you to do to get back that fresh look?It depends on the material it’s made of.

If your outdoor furniture is made of wood, carefully sand and refinish it.  Start with 180-grit sandpaper.  Vacuum and clean with a tack-cloth to get all of the fine dust off (very important!).  Then apply the first coat of stain. Follow it with a light sanding using 400-grit sandpaper.  Clean again and apply another finish coat.  This is a little time-consuming – yes. But it’s so worth it !!!  Take a look at the pool lounge chairs in the photo. They look good even without the cushion.

One more note: Dark or espresso colors are the look today over previously popular natural to light wood tones!

If you furniture is made of metal, the process is essentially the same.  Instead of sandpaper take a steel brush and finish with much finer steel wool, then repaint – this time using  paint made specifically for metal.

If your outdoor furniture is made of plastic there is good news for you as well.  Rustoleum makes a spray paint that works well on plastic.  Furniture I personally resprayed 4 years ago is still looking good.  Be sure to start with a gentle power wash to remove all dirt and grime.  Let it dry and spray 2-3 thin coats of spray paint.

It’s simple and worthwhile since outdoor furniture is pricey this days! But outdoor entertaining starts with great seating from chairs to tables.

Add a few fun new pillows and your outdoor furniture will make your backyard deck and/or patio look beautiful.  Everyone will want to hang out at your house this summer!
