Off Grid Living

We often dream of a more eco-friendly and green way to live, but a community is under way in the Netherlands that could form a potential framework for what an off grid “eco-village” might look like.

ReGen Villages and architectural partners EFFEKT revealed plans for their modern eco-village at the Venice Biennale at the end of May. Since they have received what they say is a “firestorm” of activity with over 6,500 emails showing interest.

The framework for the eco-village is set around building a circle of homes that are in a closed-loop system producing their own solar and biogas power, growing organic vegetables, farming fish and chickens, harvesting water and recycling waste into fertiliser. The homes will start at around $220,000 US plus about $550 a month for food and services.

With 1,200 on the waiting list it will be interesting to see how this concept materializes and if it can provide insight into how we build communities of the future.
